Valid and Reliable Proficiency Results

All ESL Wizard proficiency level tests are based upon International Standards of Proficiency. The tests are validated through the scanning technology, which applies the algorithms for both Cambridge and IELTS to measure and validate proficiency level. 

There are three different test forms for each level of proficiency, each using the same structure and format:

  • 60 objective questions covering grammar, vocabulary, usage, understanding, listening, and reading skills.
  • Multiple choice questions that offer four possible answers with only one (1) correct answer.
  • Tests do not include short answer responses or essays.

ESL Wizard Proficiency Level Definitions





You have an ability to participate in simple conversations in comfortable situations, such as introducing  yourself, talking about family and daily activities, describing your home, and talking about your home country.





You have an ability communicate comfortably in English-speaking countries in common situations using simple language, both as a tourist and as an employee. This includes participating in meetings on familiar topics and socializing comfortably at business functions, welcoming visitors, and networking. You may not be able to develop deeper connections with English speakers.

IELTS 4-4.5
TOEFL iBT 57-86



You have an ability to interact with English speakers on familiar topics in a variety of social and business settings. You can interview for a job in your area of expertise, talk about personal and professional goals, order food in a restaurant, and talk comfortably about today’s social interests, such as movies, gaming, music and sports. You may not be able to function completely in the workplace.

TOEFL iBT 57-86



You can achieve most of your objectives and interact with others on a wide range of topics and in a variety of settings, both familiar and new. You can function independently in academic and business environments in English, although you may not understand the subtleties in more advanced communications.

TOEFL iBT 87-109



You have the ability to function independently and spontaneously with language accuracy in almost any setting. You can confidently discuss social, political, economic, ethical, cultural and current events in detail. This includes understanding the nuances and impact of these issues on society.

TOEFL iBT 110-120


Well-educated native English speakers can communicate at this level; although they may not achieve it because the professional or academic setting does not require it. You can communicate in intellectually demanding situations and speak the language at a level of performance that may be more advanced than that of an average native speaker.
